Kunst op en van papier. Papier is voor mij de gemene deler, de kunst kan van alles zijn. Zodra het op of van papier is ben ik extra geïnteresseerd. Papier is niet echt een topic op de biënnale van Venetië maar er is toch van alles te vinden. Zoals een tentoonstelling over glaskunst van Marinot op San Giorgio Maggiore met deze prachtige schetsen.

Of het kunstwerk van de jonge Gabriele Siniscalco (1994), bestaande uit 108 tekenboekjes. Gelukkig “mag” er ook nog gewoon getekend worden. Op Youtube kun je een filmpje vinden over de totstandkoming van dit werk.

In de kerk van San Lorenzo (die meer dan 100 jaar ongebruikt is geweest!) huist nu de organisatie Ocean Space. Een thema dat duidelijk ook in de kunstwereld speelt is milieu en klimaat in het algemeen, en de vervuiling van de oceanen in het bijzonder. Deze enorme penseeltekeningen zijn door kunstenaar en activiste Joan Jonas (VS) gemaakte tijdens performances, waarvan ter plekke maar ook online videos te zien zijn.

In een van mijn favoriete musea Palazzo Fortuny is nu een grote expositie over de familie Fortuny zelf. Behalve de eindproducten zijn er ook schetsen van hun stofontwerpen te zien.

Daarnaast is daar een overzichtstentoonstelling van het bijzondere werk van Yun Hyong-Keun (Korea 1928-2007). Zijn werk bestaat voornamelijk uit enorme schilderingen op canvas, maar er zijn ook enkele werken op papier te vinden.

Paper in Venice 18 – The 2019 Biennial, collateral exhibitions
Art on and from paper. Paper is the common denominator for me, the art can be anything. As soon as it is on or made from paper, I am extra interested. Paper is not really a topic at the Venice Biennale, but there is still a lot to be found.
Such as these beautiful sketches at an exhibition about glass art by Marinot at San Giorgio Maggiore.
Or the artwork of the young Gabriele Siniscalco (1994), consisting of 108 drawing booklets. Fortunately drawing is till “allowed”. On YouTube you can find a video about the creation of this work.
The Church of San Lorenzo (which has been out of use for over a 100 years!) now houses an organization called Ocean Space. A theme that clearly also plays a role in the art world is the environment and climate in general, and the pollution of the oceans in particular. These huge brush drawings were made by artist and activist Joan Jonas (USA) during performances, of which videos can be seen on the spot but also online.
One of my favorite museums Palazzo Fortuny is now showing a large exhibition about the Fortuny family itself. In addition to the end products, sketches of the fabric designs can also be seen.
There is also an big exhibition of the extraordinary work of Yun Hyong-Keun (Korea 1928-2007). His work consists mainly of huge paintings on canvas, but there are also some works on paper to be found there.
Finally (for now) I came across these colorful paperwork by Lacy Barry at the Venice Design 2019 exhibition at Palazzo Michiel.
